Costa Rica’s Pacific and Atlantic Coasts have been blessed with awesome year round waves for the pleasure of surfers from around the world.  Waves of all shapes and sizes, breaking right or left are easily found along the Costa Rican coast.

Surf towns add to the waves appeal by offering a laid back and earthy environment which make surfers feel at home.  A wide variety of low cost and cheap accommodations can be found in the Pacific coast as well as the Atlantic.

During the months of November throughout April, winds heading in a north-east direction hit the Pacific Coast making this the best spot for catching awesome waves.  The beaches in Guanacaste are the attraction for local and international surfers.  From north to south, Playa Potrero sits on the coast’s northern area and offers excellent left and right waves.

Moving a little further south is the famous breaking point of Witch’s Rock, or Roca Bruja in Spanish.  This spot is not for the beginner or the inexperienced!  The wave type here is Rivermouth which break from either left or right.  Witch’s Rock breaking point has a sandy bottom and the waves are categorized as hollow, fast and powerful.

The not so experienced surfer needs not to worry, in the laid back and cool town of Nosara is Playa Negra.  This reef break offers some exciting right waves that become fast and hollow during the high tide.

Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast boasts of over 30 mapped surf beaches, and this is not counting the jealously guarded awesome breaking points that can only be found with the help of a local!  The more popular spots where locals gather are Quepos, Jaco, Cabo Blanco and Dominical in the southern pacific coast.

Long Boards?  Yep! A long board competition is held yearly at Tamarindo beach.  Hundreds of worldwide competitors arrive in order to participate and confirm that these waves are truly comparable to the Hawaiian waves.
