The northern province of Guanacaste in Costa Rica is one of the most popular regions in the country due to its spectacular beaches, nature and tradition.  Guanacaste is locally and international known for its strong cultural roots and for keeping traditions alive.

As it is normal in the Latin American culture, several of these traditions are strongly tied to the Catholic religion.  The community of Nicoya in Guanacaste celebrated the entrance of the town’s patron Saint Blaise or San Blas in Spanish.

Traditionally for over 100 years, the image of the patron saint visits all the towns of Guanacaste to enter Nicoya in February.  Hundreds of devotees pilgrimage behind the image before its entrance to Nicoya.  Singing and praying is part of the procession and people march along by foot, bicycle, horseback and even motorcycles.

A 74 year old organizer couldn’t contain her joy to see so many people keep the 100 year old tradition alive.  The patron saint was placed in the Nicoya colonial Catholic Church where mass was held Tuesday morning at 9am.

The actual celebration of the patron Saint Blaise will take place on Wednesday February 4th, 2009, at the colonial Catholic Church of Nicoya.

Guanacaste is currently Costa Rica’s hottest tourism destination for local and foreign visitors.  Costa Rica hotels in the area cater to all types of budgets, life styles and demands.  Beaches such as Tamarindo, Samara and Nosara attract thousands of visitors while nature lovers tend to flock towards the Rincon de la Vieja National Park and the Santa Rosa National Park.
