Every year for the last four years, the San Juan of Murcielago mountain bike race takes place just north of the Virilla River.  If you’re in the central valley area and an avid mountain biker, you may sign on to participate this Sunday in this classic race.

The race will be divided into two categories with an intermediate difficulty level of 6-7.  The two categories will be differentiated by distance.  Technical and physical challenges will include steep slopes and sharp descents.

Bikers can choose between a 25 and 43 kilometer category which will depart with a 30 minute difference.  The route will go through coffee plantations and private farms which gives the race an intermediate difficulty level yet still within the San Jose area.

This mountain bike race was recently added to the already popular marathon event that has taken place in the area for over 30 years.  The 34th International San Juan Athletic Classic Marathon kicks off at 8:30am and runners will have to try to keep the lead for 21 kilometers.

The Mountain Bike Race takes off in Tibas while the San Juan marathon takes off near Ochomogo in Cartago and ends in Tibas where both events will meet.

Inscription for the mountain bike race is 5,000 colones (about $10) and includes a t shirt, squirt bottle and medical assistance during the race.  The marathon has an inscription cost of $3,500 (about $7) and the total prizes that will be given away combine to about 2 million colones (about $4000).
