It’s no secret that the busiest place in Costa Rica during the end of year vacation period is the North Pacific Province of Guanacaste.  Home to the most popular beaches, greatest surf spots, active volcanoes and national parks, Guanacaste is the “it” place during the Costa Rican Summer.

Although the quickest way to reach Guanacaste is by flying into the Daniel Oduber International Airport from abroad or by means of a domestic flight, the most popular access route is still by land.

The drive from downtown San Jose to Guanacaste can take around 4 to 5 hours depending on the time of day as well as the day of the week.  Although it may sound as a long drive, the drive is quite scenic.

Travelers will be marveled at the abrupt changes of vegetation as well as climate as they go through nice calm valley climate to chilly cloud forest and finally the dry tropical forest of the North Pacific Coast.

During the holiday season traffic can be a bit heavy at the height of Mt. Cambronero near Puntarenas, so it’s always a good idea to make sure you leave with sufficient time especially if traveling during the weekend.

In addition, the Transportation Department in Costa Rica has set up a control point near the International Airport in Liberia as an extra precaution to maintain a quick and safe transit in the area.

The most popular Costa Rica hotels as well as beach houses are located in the province of Guanacaste and along its Pacific Coast which makes the area a very popular summer destination.  Just put on some good music, enjoy the scenery and you’ll be soaking up the sun in no time.
