Costa Rica’s South Pacific waters have become quite the hot spot for hundreds of local and foreign tourists.  The months of August through December witness the arrival of these large sea mammals as the meet during mating season.

Several local tour operators have found that taking tourists out to the open sea on Whale watching tours has proven to be a profitable business.  Although a specific amount is not revealed, the industry claims it is a multimillion dollar business.

Tours are carried out near the Corcovado National Park which is a protected area by law due to its unique vegetation and wildlife.  Marine wildlife is also strictly protected near the coast and fishing in the area is strongly penalized by law.

It is common to see Coast Guards patrolling the Costa Rican South Pacific Ocean along with tour operators in order to make sure illegal commercial or sport fishing is not being practiced in these waters.

Tourists who engage in these activities will be able enjoy the spectacular view of humpback whales jumping out of the water in midair to land on their side with a big splash.  Friendly dolphins are also part of the scenery as its common to have them playfully race alongside the boat.

In all, the Costa Rican South Pacific Ocean is a tourist magnet during the last months of the year as visitors are sure to take home the experience of a lifetime.

Our second visit to Whales & Dolphins was just as rewarding and pleasurable as our other visits here. The place is just awesome -the tranquility of the rainforest trails quite amazing.

The friendliness of the staff, the cleanliness of the cozy rooms, the wonderful fruits and delicious meals are also what makes our stay here so much fun. But if you decide to leave the resort, there are several tours we’ve taken that were real adventures and quite reasonably priced.

What we like best about Whales and Dolphins though is their commitment to local conservation and community efforts, and their dedication to sound environmental practices.

We look forward to our next visit, yes, there is gonna be plenty more to W&D – to see our old friends there, and to make new adventures!

Whales and Dolphins is a magical place, from the 180 degree view of the ocean on the horizon to the magical rainforest sounds of tides, monkeys and birds from our cabin, I felt that I was as close to tropical nature as I could possibly be without wilderness camping.

The opportunity to see toucans and howler monkeys seems unparalleled. The peaceful energy from the staff and intelligent layout of the grounds creates a serene mood. Access to the beach is ideal, and the swimming hole is like Eden.

The creatively prepared food and the flexibility of the chef made mealtimes lovely as well. This is my favorite spot in Costa Rica.
