Coco Island Organization Receives a Nice Donation
The Coco Island’s fame and attention has increased over the last few months due to its participation within the New 7 Wonders of Nature contest which will conclude its first phase by December 31st, 2008.
Due to the island’s richness in regards to its marine biodiversity, the Coco Island is considered one of Costa Rica’s most valued treasures as far as natural resources is concerned.
The Wal-Mart of Central America division in Costa Rica started a campaign in which it sold stickers and sticker albums related to the Coco Island in order to raise funds to donate for the islands conservation and protection.
The campaign was called “Pégate a la Isla ” which has a play of words that can translate to “Stick to the Island ”. The campaign started in April and has been active since then. Customers were presented with 8 different types of stickers with a cost of approximately ¢25 and a collectors album with a cost of $1.
The stickers and album have beautiful images of the Coco Island’s marine life as well as bits of information from which customers can learn about the island. The campaign collected an approximate $83,000 which Wal-Mart of Central America added another $14,000 for donation.
A total of $97,000 was donated by Wal-Mart of Central America to the Friends of the Coco Island Foundation (FAICO) to support several protection programs on the island which the organization has developed.
