Over 13 companies had bought into the chance to participate in the managing of the Daniel Oduber International Airport in Liberia, Guanacaste but only 1 company turned in the offer.
The company that turned in the offer is the Houston Airport System Development Company (HASDC) who is also well into negotiations for managing the Juan Santamaria International Airport in the central valley. The company who will eventually step in to manage the airport in Liberia will need to invest in the construction of 8 new gates, airline counters and waiting areas which can hold at least 1,500 people.
The Liberia Airport urgently needs to be modernized due to the rapid increase in tourists using this airport for arrivals as well as departures. The Minister of Transportation, Karla Gonzalez , mentioned that by having only one offer, the situation could have both advantages and disadvantages for the country. On one hand, if only one company makes an offer, the negotiation will be quick as there will not be any other companies appealing the decision.
On the other hand, if the only company making an offer decides to back out, the government would have to launch a new contest which will mean more time. The Ministry of Transportation and Public Work (MOPT) had calculated that a budget of at least $19 million would be needed to expand the Daniel Oduber International Airport. However, the amount offered by HASDC was not publicly disclosed.
